Level: Beginner and Beyond
Class Description: Taking ideas from nature, forging skills will be taught and expanded on to complete a variety of projects. Learn to use a variety of punches, chisels and other simple tooling to create textures, pods, vines and other natural shapes, by hand, using a treadle hammer and power hammer. Have fun learning to forge leaves, vines, tendrils, and learn various texturing techniques, and experiment with forging other natural forms. Along with some forging of found objects to create flowers, etc. Students can contact instructor to discuss personal projects they would like to complete in the class. This is class is also a great next step if you have taken an introductory class in Blacksmithing because you will refine and build upon basic skills.
Instructor Bio: Jim has been blacksmithing for 30 years. He began blacksmithing while working for the National Park Service at Millbrook Village, a historic restoration. After 11 years he started his own blacksmith shop in Shawnee, PA and began selling his work through fine art and craft shows. He now specializes in various custom projects, from sculpture, gates, railings, fire place screens, to kitchen and bathroom fixtures. Jim has taught at Peters Valley Crafts School and the New England School of Metal Work. Jim is a juried member of the Pa Guild of Craftsmen, and received the Strerling Strauser award in 2004, from the COTA. His work can be seen on his web site.
