Level: Beginner and Beyond
Class Description: Expand your basketry designs by exploring the combining of weaving techniques and materials. You will use rib construction, twining or your own techniques that you are familiar with to explore sculptural basketry. Please bring your materials of choice, both soft and hard, along with a few suggested materials that will be provided in the student supply list. Topics covered will include; decreasing and increasing sizes and shapes of baskets while also taking into consideration individual materials. Double walls, tunnels and layering will be explored in soft, rigid and woven forms. You will be responsible for providing your own materials of choice and the items on the material list. Bring an open mind a creative spirit.
Instructor Bio: Mary Hettmansperger is a fiber and jewelry artist who teaches internationally, including Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, and Singapore. She teaches across the US, including, Arrowmont, Penland, and Peters Valley art schools, Bead and Button, Wire masters, Convergence, National and Regional Fiber conferences, Art and Craft Schools, and private Guilds. Mary has authored and illustrated 4 books Fabulous Woven jewelry, Wrap, Stitch, fold and Rivet, Mixed metal Jewelry workshop, and Heat, Color, set and Fire all published by Lark/Sterling. Mary’s work can also be found in numerous books, magazines and on television. Mary has had work exhibited at SOFA – through the Katie Gingrass Gallery.
