Gallery Assistant/Sales Associate
The Peters Valley Gallery showcases contemporary American crafts handmade by distinguished artists from the region and across the country. The retail space represents over 200 emerging and established artists in a range of media: pottery, jewelry, glass, wood, wearable fiber arts, photography, toys, books, and more. The Sally D. Francisco Exhibition Gallery, located on the second floor, hosts several rotating, curated exhibits throughout the year.
The Gallery Assistant reports to the Gallery Director, aiding in the day to day operations and behind the scenes duties in the retail, online and exhibition galleries. The gallery assistant works both independently and collaboratively with the gallery director and other members of the Peters Valley team, as well as with gallery artists, workshop students and instructors, and other customers and visitors. The gallery staff provides information to the general public about Peters Valley’s programs and the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.
This position requires a detail-oriented, service-oriented person who is outgoing and able to convey information to visitors, students, and instructors in a friendly, courteous, tactful and accurate manner. Applicant should be proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite and photo-editing software, have a background and/or knowledge in fine craft and retail and/or customer service experience.
The Gallery Assistant is responsible for entering inventory, photographing artwork and entering product information for online store, helping with exhibition set up, opening and closing independently, light cleaning, clerical work, and the sales and personal interaction stated above. This position is 32 hours/week, benefits eligible, hourly. Weekend hours are required.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit and to work at a computer. The employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle or touch objects, tools or controls and to talk fluently and to hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, to walk, and to bend and to occasionally handle hazardous materials. Specific vision required by this job includes close vision. The employee must regularly lift and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds or more. This position requires strength and stamina as it involves climbing on ladders, handling artwork and objects of varying dimensions, weight and volume, and construction-related activities such as painting, moving pedestals, and transporting crates.

This is a part time hourly position that begins about May 1st and runs through September 10, 2017. The work requires 20-30 hours per week including weekend availability as our food service is open from Thursday through Tuesdays. This is a fast paced dining hall serving adult students and instructors during the summer workshop season. The Dining hall serves breakfast, lunch and dinner at set times. Applicant should possess the ability to work well with others in a small setting and strong customer service skills.
Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and work with their hands. The employee is required to use hands. The employee is required to use hands to finger, handle or touch objects, tools or controls and to talk fluently and to hear. The employee is frequently required to walk on natural terrain and carry items. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects weighing up to 75 pounds. Specific vision required by this job is close vision. Climate control is very limited and the kitchen can be hot for sustained periods of time.
